Released on DVD for the first time, Cho Chang Ho's remarkable and unpredictable debut film revolves around teenager Han Soo (Ohn Joo Wan, Flying Boys) and his coming-of-age trials. The star of the school swimming team, Han Soo lives in a small seaside town with his mother. When his mother becomes comatose after attempting suicide, he gives up swimming, spending all his time at his mother's bedside. Written and directed by Bahman Ghobadi, Turtles Can Fly is a lyrical, heartbreaking portrait of the devastation of war. Set in Ghobadi's native Kurdistan, the film sees life from the perspective of a group of children making do in no man's land. Thirteen-year-old Soran (Soran Ebrahim) is the child leader of his village, organizing minefield sweepings and helping to install antennae and satellite dishes. Soran holds a torch for the orphaned Agrin (Avaz Latif), but her brother disapproves of their relationship.
