Screened at the 2002 Cannes Film Festival, Mainland film The Gua Sha Treatment is about the lives of Chinese immigrants in America. Starring award-winning Hong Kong actor Tony Leung Ka Fai, the film looks at Chinese-Western cultural differences from a special angle, and at the same time explores the notions of family and tradition in the context of cultural shock.
Video game designer Datong (Tony Leung) lives in St. Louis with his family. When Datong's father (Zhu Xu) visits from China, he performs a traditional Chinese medicinal treatment, "e;Gua Sha"e;, on his young grandson. Though painless, the treatment leaves bright red marks on the skin which are interpreted by the kid's teacher as signs of abuse. The family is accused of child abuse, and Datong's son gets transferred to a foster home…
