Do Not Work For JYP Entertainment!

JYP Cleaned Up

For those of you who missed my earlier post about working for JYP Entertainment you should read it. Apparently JYP entertainment is looking for a full time Online Marketing Assistant to help spread the word about their Kpop talent such as Wonder Girls, 2PM, and other newcomers that are soon to emerge onto the Asian market.

However, as I was digging deeper into JYP I found a first hand account on what it is like to work for JYP Entertainment. This first hand account was a review about JYP Entertainment was given by a previous intern who had worked for the company in 2008.

The person did give some good points about the company:

  • One of the largest Korean Entertainment companies next to SM Entertainment and YG Entertainment.
  • The work is flexible and the environment is laid back. There are no cubicles in the office. It is an open room with 6 employee’s working right next to each other.
  • They provide lunch and dinner. The cook is amazing.

Here are the bad points about working for JYP Entertainment…

  • The management is disorganized and not professional.
  • The studio has more power than the office. In the entertainment business, music should not be the central point of the business. The studio makes all the decisions from what the daily schedule is to what . Even though you believe that it is not the right strategy, you are unable to fight back or respond with your opinions. Maybe it is the Korean culture, but it should not be in effect here in America where business is done with other American companies.
  • The upper management treats the lower employees unfairly.
  • Interns are expected to clean and do the dirty work for nothing in exchange.

The Intern even had this piece of advice for their senior management…

“Treat all employees with respect even though you are older and in a higher position.”

You can read the review here

After reading about JYP Entertainment’s New York office I found this description onĀ  Manta.com:

“JYP Entertainment is a private company categorized under Entertainment Bureaus and located in New York, NY. Current estimates show this company has an annual revenue of $1 to 2.5 million and employs a staff of approximately 5 to 9.”

Do you feel like going there to check it out yourself? Here is where you could work if you wanted to mop the floors for free… The Job is posted on Craig’s List!

I took out their phone number for obvious reasons.

I don’t know about you, but I would not want to work in an environment where the managers discourage free thinking and creativity. I am a manager and I would never look down on an intern… that is where I get some of the best ideas. Young minds with a fresh attitude is what makes Canada such a great place to live… and I believe that also is the case for the United States of America.

Do you want to know why JYP Entertainment is not doing as good as they would like in North America? According to their own workers… their management sucks… (this is not my opinion)

i’d take a pinch of salt with everything the interns say, it’s going to be biased. the bottom line is bosses will always want the most work done and the workers will want to do less.

is it really a culture thing? i’ve worked with some arrogant interns before who thought they knew better than the older experienced staff. they think they know but they don’t. sometimes experience is more important.

creativity and ideas are good and shouldn’t be stifled, maybe she just went about it in the wrong way? respect is something you gain and not something that is handed out just like that.

It’s mostly a culture thing, I believe. I’ve worked at a couple different offices in Seoul and it’s the same. Plus I’ve shared stories with my Korean friends here and they’ve all had similar stories from their companies. It’s just the way it is in Korean company culture.

Needles to say, I’m very thankful to be working at a multinational company now…

even if it’s because of the culture thing, they should not do like that in america, too.
i guess that’s why jyp’s looking for some workers 24/7.
i mean, who wants to work at there? nobody
